How much water is enough for you?!

Being healthy comes with a lot of confusing and conflicting information, right?

At Lazy Bones Fitness, we try to go for a very simple approach.

We do the research, we do our best to filter the good from the bad and we give you a simple answer in plain English.

So, how much water is enough for you?

Well firstly, why is water so important to us?

The average adult human consists of around 60% water.

This is in all parts of the body.  The internal organs, including the brain!

The skin, blood, lungs, muscles, even the bones!

So it is pretty important to keep the body well hydrated.

And we all know how it feels to be a little dehydrated.

Feeling sluggish, slight head ache, limbs feeling heavy, everything just becoming a little bit more hard work.

So we know that it’s important to stay hydrated.

And water is free (well kind of…) and doesn’t bring with it excess calories, teeth rotting sugars nor (to all but very few) any risk of an allergic reaction.

How much should we be consuming?!?

The “Eatwell Guide” suggests 6 – 8 cups or glasses of water a day.

But how much is in a cup or glass?

Our research leads us to suggest that this equates to around 1.2 litres of water a day.

Other reports that we have studied, have shown evidence that this is way under the requirements and in fact we should be having anywhere between 3 and 5 litres a day.

That being said, it is important to remember that our foods also contains water, so this isn’t only through the clear liquid from a cup or glass.

To make it simple.

Lazy Bones Fitness encourages drinking 2 litres of water a day.

Well this should be achievable by the vast majority and sits somewhere in the middle of all of those confusing and conflicting reports.

But, if 2 litres is something you’d struggle with?

Or you just don’t really keep count, then that is fine.

Just remember this!

Anything is better than nothing.

Sure, there are optimums and guidelines and recommendations and sure, you should probably have a little more fluid if you’re feeling sluggish, etc.

But don’t beat yourself up.  Just get up, head on over to a tap, fill up your water bottle and drink a little bit more.

Our favourite tips to helping you keep your water intake up, include:

  • Always keep a water bottle or glass of water to hand
  • Use a marked water bottle
  • Use an app to help keep track
  • Add variety by infusing fruits or vegetable
  • Aim to drink one glass of water as soon as you wake up
  • Drink a glass of water with every meal
  • Vary between drinking through a straw, from a glass and out of a bottle
  • Set a timer / reminder on your phone
  • Record your daily water intake
