Keeping It Healthy When Working Away
Keeping it healthy when working away can be extremely difficult!
There’s a lot of temptation…
- All you can eat buffets
- Sugary snacks
- Lots of caffeine
- Desserts
- Booze
But it needn’t be a struggle.
Firstly and most importantly, remember this…
Anything is OK in moderation
So there is absolutely NO need to limit yourself to simple salads
And spend your time away, bored of the food
With a rumbling tummy that’s making more noise than a jumbo jet at take off!
Take your water bottle
The first thing to remember to pack for your work trip away
Should be your water bottle!
It’s often difficult to stay hydrated when on the road with work.
Not having easy access to a water source
And generally keeping to a busy timetable can act as a barrier.
But it is vital to do so, not only does hydration help improve our mental and physical performance
But also increases our work performance!
So, take your water bottle with you and fill it up first thing in the morning.
Then again at lunch.
No self respecting restaurant or hotel would refuse you to fill your water bottle!
Breakfast
Presuming you’re staying overnight in a hotel, the first hurdle of the day is often the buffet breakfast.
Make sure you start off right.
Some great choices that are regularly on offer include:
- Poached eggs on wholemeal toast
- Natural or Greek yoghurt with fresh fruit
- Low-sugar wholegrain cereal with skimmed milk and fresh fruit
- Freshly made porridge with dried fruit sprinkled on top
- A small glass of fresh fruit juice
Avoid the sugary cereals.
Avoid the greasy fry-up.
Avoid NOT eating breakfast!
Start your day off with enough energy to get through the meetings…
Buffet Lunch
Presented with a platter of finger foods, it’s easy to over eat here.
A lot of the options are typically high in saturated fats.
But not all is lost.
Don’t worry, you don’t need to go hungry!
Firstly, we’d suggest you don’t pick eat from the platter plates.
Instead, load a plate up and sit to eat it as you would any other meal.
If possible, choose wholemeal bread and lean meat sandwich options.
Skip the sugary desserts and opt for fruit instead.
Oh and don’t forget to fill up that water bottle…
Choose water over the bottomless coffee supply.
Dining Out
More often than not, when working away, it’s an opportunity to explore different restaurants.
Choose fish, seafood, chicken or vegetarian meals instead of processed meat options.
Also think about how that food is cooked,
Looking for steamed, baked or grilled.
Don’t be afraid to ask to adjust the meal,
Possibly swapping out the chips for veg or a side salad.
Fancy something sweet?
Try a sorbet!
(Ask, even if they don’t have it on their menu).
Failing that, a fruit salad is nice to finish the meal off with.
Booze
Remember, alcohol is very high in calories.
Everything in moderation,
But treat it like any other school night.
Perhaps a glass of non-alcoholic in between the boozy options?
To wrap up
Anything is OK in moderation.
Plenty of veg,
Start the day with a decent breakfast,
Limit the booze
And keep as hydrated as physically possible.
Keep moving as much as you can.
You don’t have to hit the hotel gym,
But a walk before dinner or a hotel room workout are always an idea!
A bonus !
Why not keep a food diary for the time that you’re away?
It’s a great way to keep you focused on what you’re eating
And keeps yourself accountable…
